This photo was taken on a calm, sunny day but the Pier didn't always have such tranquil days. The Pier at Old Orchard Beach in Maine first opened to the public on July 2, 1898. It jutted out 1825 feet into the ocean and was a premier spot to visit by celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Xavier Cugat and Benny Goodman. But storms took their toll on the pier and the Blizzard of 1978 destroyed the pier. It was rebuilt and reopened in 1980. The Pier was also featured in the 2002 Motion Picture, "In the Bedroom," which received an Academy Award nomination
